I wrote this album in two halves. Three songs were written in Manchester and the other three were written over in Berlin where I live now. Change and uncertainty in my personal life have hugely influenced this record, as has living in East Berlin (the nightlife, the abandoned space, the oases of incredible nature that you stumble upon).
The atmospheres and context of this album relate to almost post-apocalyptic scenes - I guess this sounds pretty bleak but it's not meant to be negative - in many ways it's a liberating feeling. Many of the songs on album simultaneously embody euphoria and deep sadness, a sense of emotional and geographical displacement. Using music from other cultures and combing those together into visions of a new culture has been a constant in my work. It's hardly a concept record, but throughout the writing and recording process this vision of a broken but ultimately healed society, or peaceful aftermath of a great cultural/societal destruction was one that kept emerging. And forests. The forests in Berlin have been one of the single biggest influences on me creatively.
This is the first DEADBEAR record I have released myself; every other record has been put out by a label, so I'm really excited to combine my first self release with my debut album. I hope you enjoy the music.
